Final Blog Draft

Jerricho Scroggins MH2 Final Blog

Hey everyone, Welcome to my very own Blogging...
I'm Jerricho Scroggins and currently in my 15th month at Full Sail.  Right now I'm in Music History II.  I'm a huge fan of music (Rock way more than anything else).  My favorite singer is Chester Bennington (Linkin Park, Dead By Sunrise, & Grey Daze) and that is all I need to say about that.  I enjoy watching movies and playing video games just like anyone else does.  I'm not exactly what field I want to attend when leaving Full Sail, I just want to be apart of music.  Yeah there are things I value more than others, but I'm not going to reject an offer for something else because it's still music.

The Beach Boys came out with music that blew the world’s mind.  It is impossible to listen to an oldie radio station and not hear a song by them.  The whole structure and layers of harmonies is what makes their unique sound.  Created the sound for “surfers’ rock,” with their own little touch.  The Beach Boys got fame and publicity very quickly.  It was not long before they were doing big tours, and making at least one album a year.  Gaining the help and working with Phil Spector helped shape Brian and create great music.  Brian Wilson even hired the same musicians Phil Spector was using.
Brian Wilson was the biggest part of the Beach Boys.  Without his abilities, writing, and singing, they probably would not be around.  Brian Wilson is how the Beach Boys have their unique sound and provided awesome songs heard around the world.  I like the fact that he stopped touring to focus on making epic albums.  I love seeing bands live, but in my choice I would rather listen to an awesome CD than seeing the band play bad songs.  For the “Pet Sounds” album, he really wanted to branch out and not make the same CD over and over. When the rest of the Beach Boys heard this, they did not like it at all.  There are some different musical items that were added into this album.  “You Still Believe In Me” features a car horn, “Caroline No” features a railroad crossing at the end of the song, and “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times” has a Theremin.  The “Pet Sounds” song is an instrumental and the title of the album.  Another instrumental is “Let’s Go Away For Awhile.”  Pet Sounds was a very emotional album for Brian Wilson, and that’s why it sounds so different.  Creating music that was not just about girls, the beach, or any other popular themes, he took the opportunity to tell his story.  Brian Wilson got assistance from Tony Asher when writing this album.  “God Only Knows” was a very good song.  Using french horns and a harpsichord, was only noticed until the word God was being sang in this song.  People thought this was going to be controversial, but turned out to be a good song.  Think about a place that you would want to go or be apart of, and that was the story Brian Wilson was trying to tell. “Good Vibrations” was the most expensive single that was made in this time era, and was definitely unheard of.  Using many different instruments, writing different and more personal meanings, and the way they went about in recording this album shows why Pet Sounds was different than so many other albums.
I enjoyed this album.  I like the fact that they wanted to experiment and do things that were out of the ordinary.  What is so amazing is that the stuff they did back then is only one push of a button now.  Using effects to the extent that they did, and how much work they did was worth it.  It is when CDs like “Pet Sounds,” that creates the effects and sounds we do on a normal basis today.

I do not even know where to start for The Beatles “Revolver” album.  The work they put into this album definitely shows, and is still a piece of art in today’s society.  I just need to say that “Eleanor Rigby” is by far the best song.  The string octet is epic and Paul blends very well with them in this song.  Not one song on this album goes over three minutes, and some only reaching two minutes.  I think of Alice In Chains “We Die Young” is two minutes thirty-one seconds, and it seems like it gets cut off.  On this album, you do not get that feeling. The timing fits each individual song.  I also need to mention that I hate listening to this album in stereo.  In almost every song, everything besides vocals is completely panned hard left or right.  This is very distracting.  “Revolver” has music that really stands out.  All the effects (reverse guitar/vocals, Leslie Cabinet, etc) took lots of effort and you can tell.  A lot of the effects they used in the 60s are something that we are now using digitally.  That thought is crazy and I bet they never expected music to go where it did after albums like this.
The Beatles started out as an ill-mannered band wearing jeans, cursing, smoking, and eating on stage.  Soon they were wearing matching suits and behaving better on stage.  Before Revolver, teenagers that were into the latest fads followed The Beatles.  After Revolver, more college age students joined the following.  There were several influences other than music that contributed to Revolver.  John Lennon was inspired by a book called “The Psychedelic Experience, and all the Beatles were influenced by LSD, marijuana, and Eastern religion.  Three new ground breaking techniques were used for the first time in the making of Revolver.  These include artificial double tracking, close micing, and backwards tapes.  In the song “Tomorrow Never Knows,” they had eight tape decks that they put all around the studio, and they changed the movement of loops when recording.  Since the four-track recorder was invented, they could take two takes of the vocals.  Being able to fake a double is something that I think is very common now, and the Beatles did it in the 60s.  This can be heard on songs like “Eleanor Rigby” (vocals) and “Here, There And Everywhere” (guitar).

Velvet Underground & Nico was the debut album from the band Velvet Underground.  This band was the forefathers of the punk era that is still going today.  Mixing poetry and meaningful lyrics with music that was all over the place, Velvet Underground made it work.  At first, they were not very well looked upon.  They used dark subject matter such as drug abuse and behavior in their lyrics.  Many engineers refusing to record the band because of what they thought was garbage.  Having Lou Reed and John Cale were the root and key writers for the band.  Coming from two different background influences, they combined their ability to create their own sound.  John Cale is a classically trained musician, and that is what he wanted to play.  He came from the United Kingdom and he went to school to be apart of the Bernstein Scholarship and worked with La Monte Young (composer).  Lou Reed had his own ideas and style.  He always wanted to rock out, but he also wanted more out of lyrics.  Looking at Raymond Chandler (writer) as an icon, and wanting to put his words to music and that is what he did.  Writing in the same style and meaning, and with the help of John Cale, this is when Velvet Underground’s sound came about.  Lou Reed even had a song called, “The Ostrich” where all the strings in the guitar were tuned to an A sharp.  Velvet Underground got help from Andy Warhol before they started to get some spotlight.  Andy Warhol was an artist and saw what Velvet Underground stood for.  He became the manager and sat in all the recording sessions.  Andy Warhol had little influence on the album, but paid for the recording sessions.  Without collecting a dime, Velvet Underground eventually became to big for an inexperienced manager and Andy Warhol was then let go.  John Cale and Tom Wilson are the ones that contributed to producing this album.  Nico became apart of this group when Andy introduced her to Lou Reed and John Cale.  Nico came from Andy’s Chelsea Girls, and became the icing on the cake for Velvet Underground.
I am not a huge fan of the punk music that is played now adays.  I think I would have been one of those engineers that questioned to record them.  I am a person that hears something out of key and I stop to fix it.  Creating this sound and style is cool though, because they opened many doors and brought inspiration to people I do like (David Bowie).

Marvin Gaye was religious, family, and worldly oriented man.  Starting off as just a normal singer, his career soon became much more meaningful.  Raised at home with a father that was a preacher, he learned what kind of person he was going to become.  This is where his motivation for writing music started and the topics he was choosing.  When it came time for What’s Going On, he was bothered by the way his surroundings, friends, and family are going through.  Dealing with his brother and other veterans during and after the Vietnam War were some main contributions to this album.  Police brutality, Kent State, and other events that should not have taken place became the voice of Marvin Gaye. I would say that a main influence was the stories that his brother told when he got back from the war.  He took what his brother saw and lived through and started his controversial album.  Motown being his record label and Berry Gordy (founder and brother-in-law) did not want to release this album. Marvin Gaye eventually said that he would not record anymore until they would release it. Breaking away from traditional love songs to a political album was not very well looked upon nor was it expected.  Marvin continued and recorded the album with people from the Funk Brothers.  He even had a brass session that he got what he wanted for the record when they were just warming up.
Listening to his lyrics is really meaningful.  I can tell what point he is getting across and what he is feeling too.  Creating albums with full stories behind them are the best albums. Being able to stand up for what you believe is a trait that not many people have.  There is instrumentation that was done on this album that I question, but for Marvin it works out really well.  This album proved that it does not have to be a regular tune, but as long as there is meaning behind something, people will get it because they understand.

1974 – Autobahn
1975 – Radio-Activity
1977 – Trans-Europe Express
1978 – The Man-Machine
1981 – Computer World

Kraftwerk is an eletronic style band with two main characters.  Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider are the only two members that have been around since the beginning.  They have had many musicians throughout the years playing other instruments.  Kraftwerk created their unique image starting from Germany to becoming known worldwide.  Having many albums, there were five main albums that gave them the spotlight.  In 1974, Kraftwerk released the album “Autobahn” that became well known across the world.  Due to the twenty-minute song Autobahn, Kraftwerk introduced the electronic sound that no one has heard with music and it opened up many doors.  Using many forms of electronic keyboards and pads, the song lyrics spoke of modern living and technology.  The song Autobahn was really about traveling on the Autobahn in Germany.  Becoming very popular, albums afterwards were popular too. In 1975 “Radio-Activity” was released, 1977 “Trans-Europe Express,” 1978 was “The Man-Machine,” and in 1981 was the release of “Computer World.”  Soon they created the image of same color suits that got stuck with them and is to be expected.  “Radio-Activity” was inspired by the success they had and their music being played on the radio.  This album got them success in Europe.  As you were probably thinking already, “Trans-Europe Express” is really about a train.  There was not much stuff after “The Man-Machine” album, but after “Computer World,” Kraftwerk went back on tour.  Kraftwerk being the main influence and creator of the electronic genre, they have also influenced other genres such as techno and hip-hop.  Many groups like Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, and many more groups have been influenced by the works of Kraftwerk.
I like what Kraftwerk did.  Branching out the way they did is really cool.  They took sounds that were available, and some of their own and made music out of them.  Kraftwerk would be a good group to work with because I think they would be open and willing to try a lot of things.  Creating electronic music and being able to sing onto the song plus making it a top seller is a hard task to achieve and I think Kraftwerk did this very well.

Nine Inch Nails (NIN)
Nine Inch Nails is by far my favorite group that plays electronic music.  I should not even say Nine Inch Nails, because really it is just one guy.  Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails, meaning that he writes and records all the music and vocals.  He only gets a band together when he performs live or any other special occasions.  Nine Inch Nails has drawn the line on how far you can go with electronic music.  Going from the drum sets, vocals, bass, guitars, and other sound effects, there is lots of electronics moving through his songs.  It is hard to say whom he inspires due to his unique sound.  I am sure many bands take ideas from him, and certain groups like Marilyn Manson would not even be around if it was not for Nine Inch Nails.  Even David Bowie has learned some stuff from Nine Inch Nails.  They created a song together called “I’m Afraid Of Americans,” and if you have not heard it (or watched the music video), you should do so after reading this blog.   The songs Head Like A Hole, Wish, Closer, The Perfect Drug, and so many more are classic songs and when you hear them, you know the words and who it is.  Let us not forget about the song Hurt, (which people argue was the returning cover song for Johnny Cash) which many people know the song and many bands cover.  Creating many albums, going on tours, and free stems for downloading are many ways Nine Inch Nails is heard around the world.  Trent Reznor also just co-wrote (with Atticus Ross) the score to Social Network in which won many awards including an oscar.  Using all kinds of synthesizers and keyboards, vocal effects, and guitar, Trent Reznor mixes the blends so that nothing stands out.
I have followed Nine Inch Nails for some time now.  I really enjoy the music, and I like how Trent Reznor does it.  I have seen him perform live once, and it was amazing how he is capable of moving from one keyboard to another keyboard and guitar to keep the songs in tact and your attention.  Trent Reznor has shown that there are no limits when it comes to MIDI and is definitely someone who inspires me.

Van Halen has been around since the early 1970s.  At that time, the lineup of the band was Alex Van Halen on the drums, Eddie Van Halen on the guitar and backup vocals, Michael Anthony on bass and backup vocals, and David Lee Roth as the lead singer.  Mark Stone was with Van Halen during the early years, but quit and was soon replaced (by Michael Anthony) before they went into the studio to record the first album.  “Van Halen” was the first studio album that was released in 1978.  This album started a whole new wave of music and style that would continue on and still be around this present day.  Eddie Van Halen had such a unique guitar playing style, and he played lead guitar and solos that were not very common at that time.  Yes, Jimi Hendrix and many others played some awesome lead guitar too, but Eddie was the guy that created the whole 80’s wave of the long-haired, good ol’ rock n’ roll solos.  There are many bands that were influenced by Van Halen like Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Alice In Chains, (my favorite guitar player being) John 5, and so many more bands and guitar players.  Having instrumentals on their albums was a really cool feature that did not happen very often.  Eruption is the second track on “Van Halen,” and this instrumental was pretty popular.  This track showed Eddie’s unique style of playing the guitar.  Using styles such as finger picking and hammering, this is where Eddie created solos and lead guitar riffs that had not been heard before.  Alex Van Halen did not do much when it came to recording, but would add different things for live performances.  For example, Alex would put a bass drum behind the one he has already creating kick drums that were twice the length.  Alex Van Halen is still a great drummer and listening to live albums and drum solos will prove this (or listen to one of my all time favorites Hot For Teacher on the “1984” album).
I grew up listening to all the Van Halen albums and I am definitely a fan.  I think the sound that these guys produce was and still is original and you can always tell when Eddie Van Halen is playing guitar.  I would enjoy sitting in and working with Van Halen.  I know they are at the point that song structure would be up to them, but I would not care.  I could learn a lot from these guys.  Eddie Van Halen owns his own studio (5150), so I am sure he knows some secrets and techniques that would be very helpful.

Jordan Purvis, I think this was a very good blog about The Beach Boys.  I fully agree with the entire opening paragraph.  To say that The Beach Boys were one of the greatest, no one can deny that fact.  The parts you write about Brian Wilson are mostly correct too.  I disagree and would not say that Brian Wilson wrote Pet Sounds all by himself.  I know that he had help writing lyrics with Tony Asher, and when it came time to record the CD, the rest of the band and studio musicians did the recordings that Brian Wilson wanted.  I would still say that Pet Sounds would not be so unique or even around if Brian Wilson acted any other way than he did.  I like your closing statement for the fact that you put effort into what you enjoy and do musically.  Also, I agree that when an artist does something good, it should be recognized.

What's Going On (Reply)

Jordan Purvis, the blog you wrote about Marvin Gaye and his album “What’s Going On,” is very good.  The introduction paragraph is a very good summary of Marvin Gaye and provides a good understanding of his determination and music.  Knowing all the influences and reasons why he made this album were covered very well.  Mentioning the struggles and problems with this album gives an overall idea of what Marvin Gaye had to deal with.  Knowing that this album was going to be controversial, he did not let that slow down or get into his way of releasing this album.  This was a good blog, and I like how you closed all of this.  This blog was a good summary and described the album “What’s Going On” very well.

David Bowie (Reply)

Jordan Purvis, I really enjoyed reading the blog you wrote about David Bowie.  It is nice you talk about his original stage name of “Ziggy Stardust,” because I do not think many people know about that name.  David Bowie is definitely a good influence and has helped inspire bands musically and visually.  I like how you mentioned a couple of influences that have not been discussed this month.  You provided different music categories and other ways of promotion that David Bowie was a part of, and how it helped create his career.  David Bowie not graduating school was an interesting piece of information that I never knew.  Overall, I think this blog you wrote was very organized and well written.
